State Tax Law Updates

2007 major State changes are listed below. A State is not listed if it had no major changes.

California: Allows MFJ for domestic partners for their California return. They would file Single for their Federal return.

Washington DC: Allows MFJ for domestic partners for their Washington DC return. They would file Single for their Federal return.

New Jersey: Allows MFJ for domestic partners for their New Jersey return. They would file Single for their Federal return.

For the practitioner EF mandate, the threshold limit was reduced from 200 to 50 returns.

Georgia: Allows Direct Debit for balance due returns.

Adding EF Practitioner Mandates for this year: Indiana; South Carolina; New Mexico; Louisiana

Utah: For 2007 the tax must be calculated twice with the taxpayer taking the lower tax. The tax will be calculated on a Single Tax rate (sort of a flat tax) and on the traditional tax as done in the past. This method of calculating the tax is for 2007 and is expect to change again in 2008.

Alabama: Will allow part-year resident returns to be e-filed.
